From August 30 to September 8, 2025, Gighessa, a serene town near Shahemena in Ethiopia, became a hub of spiritual exploration and personal growth as it hosted the annual GEN Retreat. This transformative week brought together 45 young people from various regions Adiss Ababa, Adama, Debrezeyt, Mojo, Shashemena, Dilla, Hossana of Ethiopia to delve into the vocation of the new generation (GEN) inspired by Chiara Lubich. With the formators (Krysya, Immaculate, Hikma and guests Stephane and Jean Marie) guiding them through this journey, participants engaged in two main programs: the GEN School and the Vocational Camp.

Each segment was designed to deepen their understanding of their spiritual paths and foster a sense of community among the attendees. The GEN School: A Journey Toward Sanctity The first four days of the retreat were dedicated to the GEN School, a program focused on exploring the GEN vocation. This initiative aims to inspire young people to embrace their spiritual journeys and pursue sanctity in their daily lives.
The GEN School provided a structured environment for participants to reflect on their aspirations and commitments. The GEN School kicked off with a powerful session centered around Chiara’s advice for the Holy Journey. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their individual journeys toward sanctity, setting the tone for an enriching experience. Through interactive discussions, workshops, and group activities, attendees explored themes of self-acceptance and personal commitment.

One of the most impactful moments was a guided reflection on self-acceptance, where participants shared their struggles. This openness fostered a supportive atmosphere that allowed individuals to connect deeply with one another. The discussions emphasized that embracing one’s true self is a crucial step in the journey toward holiness. As the days progressed, participants were guided through various activities designed to help them articulate their personal commitments.

Each young person had the opportunity to express their intentions moving forward, solidifying their understanding of the GEN vocation and its significance in their lives. The GEN School featured experienced mentors and facilitators who shared their own spiritual journeys and insights. Their contributions were instrumental in creating an engaging environment that encouraged open dialogue and personal reflection. The presence of Stephane and Jean Marie added depth to the discussions, as they offered valuable perspectives on living out the GEN vocation in today’s world.
