Long-awaited and highly anticipated, the Burundi-Rwanda Gen congress finally came to fruition in Bujumbura at the end of April. With a collective representation of 55 Gens from both countries, the congress embraced the theme of “Restart.” It served as a remarkable opportunity for the two nations to reconnect after years of separation due to political tensions and the recent challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. From the outset, the congress exuded a palpable sense of unity and a shared desire to embark on a fresh journey, as suggested by its chosen theme.

Commencing on the evening of April 28th 2023 and concluding in the early hours of May 1st 2023, the congress offered a platform to delve deeper into the essence of Gen life and identity, emphasizing the significance of prayer for Gens and all believers. The event also provided an occasion to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to Jesus Forsaken while offering Him our collective struggles. Additionally, we engaged in an insightful afternoon session on Saturday, April 29, where we joined members of the movement for human formation to discuss various topics impacting the lives of numerous young individuals, including sexuality, countercultural influences, and vocation. Furthermore, we relished an enjoyable afternoon and a part of Sunday evening at the picturesque Lake Tanganyika beach.

One poignant impression shared by a first-time congress attendee, Mediatrice, encapsulated the essence of the gathering: “I had often heard about Gens being exemplars of unity and love for others, but I had never witnessed it firsthand or experienced it myself. Now that I have seen and lived among them during these few days, I am inspired to live this spirit with other people as well.”

For many Rwandan Gens, it was their inaugural visit to Burundi, and they discovered that the reality on the ground exceeded their preconceived notions. The warm reception and abundant love they received during their stay in Bujumbura left an indelible impression on their hearts.

To our surprise and delight, we were graced with a visit from Beatrice Nsanze, our zonal assistant, who happened to be in the vicinity visiting her family. Responding to the invitation extended by Privat and Ima, our Gen assistants, Beatrice dropped by to offer her well wishes for a successful congress.

The congress proved to be incredibly beneficial for our zoneta, reigniting our collective resolve to embark on a fresh start, both for the Gens of Burundi and Rwanda. Parting ways was undoubtedly challenging, but we bid each other farewell, eagerly looking forward to our next Burundi-Rwanda zoneta congress, already scheduled on our calendars.
